Originally leased to Portugal in 1557, it remained under Portuguese administration for over four centuries until its handover to China in 1999. The region is renowned for its unique blend of Portuguese and Chinese cultures, reflected in its architecture, cuisine, and traditions. Macau's economy is heavily reliant on tourism and gambling, earning it the nickname 'Las Vegas of the East'. It is the most densely populated region in the world, with a population concentrated on the Macau Peninsula, Taipa, and Coloane islands.
