Summary
About the place: Andernach is one of the oldest towns in Germany, located in Rhineland-Palatinate on the left bank of the Rhine River in the Mayen-Koblenz district.
Flag Description: The vertical banner consists of a top square section (Bannerkopf) and a lower portion divided into two vertical stripes. The upper white square features a centered black cross (Cross of Cologne) overlaid with two crossed red keys with their bits pointing upwards and outwards. The lower part consists of two vertical stripes of equal width: black on the left (hoist side) and red on the right.
Symbolism: The black cross on a white field represents the city's historical affiliation with the Electorate of Cologne (Kurköln). The crossed red keys are the attribute of Saint Peter, the patron saint of the Archdiocese of Cologne and the city of Andernach. The black and red colors of the lower stripes are derived from the tinctures of the cross and the keys.
