Summary
The territory of modern Ukraine has been a crossroads of civilizations for millennia, witnessing the rise and fall of Scythians, Sarmatians, and various Slavic tribes. Kyiv, as the center of Kyivan Rus', became a powerful medieval state, adopting Orthodox Christianity in 988 and establishing a distinct cultural identity. Following the Mongol invasions, Ukrainian lands were fragmented under Lithuanian, Polish, and Muscovite control, leading to centuries of struggle for autonomy. The Cossacks, fiercely independent warriors, played a pivotal role in shaping Ukrainian identity and resisting foreign domination, establishing semi-autonomous Hetmanates. Despite periods of relative self-governance, Ukraine remained largely partitioned until the 20th century, experiencing waves of Russification and Polish cultural influence.
