Summary

About the place: Bad Sassendorf is a spa municipality in the district of Soest in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Located in the fertile Soest Börde region, it is well known for its mineral springs and therapeutic brine baths.

Flag Description: The flag is designed as a vertical banner (Hängeflagge) consisting of three vertical stripes of green, white, and green in a width ratio of 1:3:1. The coat of arms of the municipality is centered in the upper portion of the broad white stripe. The shield is divided horizontally: the upper green field displays a yellow/gold eight-pointed star beneath a yellow/gold salt knife (Sülzmesser), while the lower white field features a red key placed horizontally with its bit pointing down and to the left from the viewer's perspective.

Symbolism: The green and white colors represent the local landscape and the municipality's status as a spa town. The salt knife (Sülzmesser) in the upper field symbolizes the historical salt production and salt-works that formed the foundation of the town. The eight-pointed star is derived from the coat of arms of the noble family von Sassendorf. The red key in the lower field is the emblem of Saint Peter, patron saint of the Electorate of Cologne, to which the area historically belonged.
