Summary

About the place: Barmstedt is a town in the district of Pinneberg, in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It is situated approximately 30 km northwest of Hamburg on the Krückau river.

Flag Description: The flag consists of two vertical stripes of equal width – red on the hoist side (left side from the viewer's perspective) and white on the fly side (right side). In the center of the flag is the town's coat of arms. The shield has a bordure indented with alternating red and white triangles in counterchanged colors. The shield is party per pale: the left side (viewer's left) features a black windmill on a masonry base in a white field, while the right side features a standing armored knight holding a lance in a red field.

Symbolism: The red and white colors reflect the traditional regional colors of Holstein. The indented border around the shield is derived from the Holstein nettle leaf (Nesselblatt). The windmill symbolizes the historic local mill, while the standing armored knight represents the medieval knight Otto von Barmstede from the 12th–13th century.
