About the place: Bátonyterenye is a town in northern Hungary, located in Nógrád County along the Zagyva River valley at the northern foot of the Mátra Mountains. The town was formed by the merger of several historical settlements including Nagybátony, Kisterenye, Maconka, and Szúpatak.
Flag Description: The flag of Bátonyterenye consists of a white rectangular field with the full achievements of the town's coat of arms centered on it. The gold shield depicts a black faceted gemstone (black diamond) from which three red flames rise upward, surrounded by small scattered black ermine spots or shingles. Above the shield rests a black tournament helmet topped with a crest depicting a leaping black stag with a golden mane and antlers. The mantling is gold and black. Below the coat of arms, the town's name "BÁTONYTERENYE" is inscribed in black serif capital letters.
Symbolism: The black faceted gemstone (black diamond) and the flames represent the historical importance of coal mining and energy production in the region. The stag in the crest refers to the abundant wildlife, forests, and hunting traditions of the surrounding Mátra and Cserhát mountains. The inscription of the town's name highlights the unification of several former villages into a single municipality.
