Summary

About the place: Bayreuth is a major city in Upper Franconia, Bavaria, situated along the Red Main river between the Franconian Jura and the Fichtel Mountains. It is internationally renowned for the annual Bayreuth Festival dedicated to Richard Wagner and features the Margravial Opera House, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Flag Description: The flag of Bayreuth is a horizontal bicolour of black and white with a ratio of 3:5. Centered on the flag is the city's coat of arms. The shield is quartered: the first and fourth quarters are quartered silver/white and black; the second and third quarters feature a black lion with red zbroj and crown on a gold/yellow field within a red-and-white bordure. Two crossed burgravial staves (sceptres) in black and white are overlaid across the entire shield.

Symbolism: The flag's black and white colours represent the historical colors of the House of Hohenzollern. The coat of arms depicts the city's heritage as the seat of the Margraves of Brandenburg-Bayreuth: the quartered black and white fields represent the Hohenzollerns, while the black lion on gold with a bordure represents the Burgraves/Vogts of Weida. The crossed staves reflect the hereditary office of the burgraves.
