Summary

About the place: Borkum is the largest and westernmost of the East Frisian Islands, located in the Wadden Sea off the northwestern coast of Germany. The town covering the island is a popular seaside health resort.

Flag Description: The flag features a white St. George's cross dividing the field into four quarters. The upper-hoist quarter (top-left from the viewer's perspective) consists of three horizontal stripes of black, red, and blue. The remaining three quarters (lower-hoist and both fly quarters) are solid green. At the intersection of the cross sits a circular emblem depicting a red lighthouse on a green mound above blue and white sea waves against a blue sky with yellow light beams, surrounded by a white border bearing the Latin inscription 'IN MEDIIS TRANQUILLUS IN UNDIS'. The aspect ratio is 3:5.

Symbolism: The three stripes in the upper hoist (black, red, blue) represent the traditional Frisian/East Frisian colors. The green color symbolizes the island's nature and pastures. The lighthouse in the central seal stands for the iconic landmarks and maritime navigation history of Borkum, while the Latin motto 'In mediis tranquillus in undis' translates to 'Tranquil amidst the waves', referring to the island's steadfastness against the North Sea elements.
