Summary

About the place: Buenos Aires (officially Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires – CABA) is the capital and largest city of Argentina, situated on the western shore of the Río de la Plata estuary on South America's southeastern coast. As an autonomous federal district, it serves as the nation's political, financial, and cultural powerhouse.

Flag Description: The flag of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires (adopted by Municipal Ordinance No. 49,669 in 1995) has an aspect ratio of 9:14 (or commonly 2:3 in practical use) and features a plain white field. Centered on the cloth is the city's historic coat of arms: a crowned black eagle facing heraldic dexter, holding a red Calatrava cross in its right talon, with four young eaglets clustered at its feet.

Symbolism: The white field and central charge are derived from the original municipal coat of arms decreed by the city's founder, Juan de Garay, in October 1580. The crowned black eagle reflects the imperial authority of the Spanish Crown under the Habsburg dynasty (Castile and León) during colonization. The red Cross of Calatrava held in the talon represents the Catholic faith, Christian evangelization, and the military-monastic chivalric order. The four young eaglets at the bottom symbolize the four Spanish colonial cities established or governed in the Río de la Plata basin: Santa Fe, La Trinidad (Buenos Aires), Corrientes, and Concepción del Bermejo.
