Summary
About the place: Calau is a town in the Oberspreewald-Lausitz district in Brandenburg, eastern Germany. It is located in the Lower Lusatia region, just southwest of the Spreewald biosphere reserve.
Flag Description: The flag of the city of Calau, with an aspect ratio of 3:5, consists of three horizontal stripes: blue, yellow, and blue in a width ratio of 1:3:1. In the center of the wide yellow stripe, the city's coat of arms is placed. The coat of arms depicts a silver shield with a red, masonry city wall featuring an open gate with a golden portcullis and two red towers with blue pointed roofs and golden finials. Floating between the towers is a small escutcheon divided per fess: the upper golden field shows a passant black lion with red claws and tongue, and the lower blue field contains three six-pointed silver stars (two above one).
Symbolism: The blue and yellow colors represent the traditional colors of Lower Lusatia. The city wall with towers symbolizes Calau's civic status and historical fortifications. The small escutcheon between the towers reflects historical rulers and civic iconography: the black lion on gold refers to the Margraviate of Meissen or Lusatian bailiffs, while the three silver stars on blue are the traditional historical emblem of the town.
