Summary
About the place: Edelény is a town in northeastern Hungary, situated in the valley of the Bódva River within Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County. It is best known for its grand baroque L'Huillier-Coburg Palace, one of the largest and most significant baroque castles in the country.
Flag Description: The flag consists of a white rectangular field with the coat of arms of Edelény charged in the center. Above the coat of arms is the black uppercase inscription 'EDELÉNY'. The coat of arms features a green shield divided by a golden cross. The first quarter (upper left from the observer's view) displays a golden grape cluster and a plowshare, while the second quarter (upper right) shows a golden calligraphic letter 'F'. The third quarter (lower left) features a golden coulter, and the fourth quarter (lower right) depicts crossed golden mining hammers. In the center of the cross is a red inescutcheon bearing a golden eagle. The main shield is flanked by green oak and laurel or palm branches at the bottom, below which is a golden ribbon with the black inscription 'Edelény' in Gothic script.
Symbolism: The white background serves as a neutral canvas for the municipal coat of arms. The emblem combines agricultural motifs (a grape cluster representing viticulture, along with a plowshare and coulter for farming) with the region's industrial heritage (crossed mining hammers denoting lignite mining). The letter 'F' references the historic village of Finkey, which merged into Edelény. The red inescutcheon with a golden eagle derives from noble families connected to the local estate. The surrounding branches and ribbon symbolize honor, endurance, and local identity.
