Summary

About the place: Erlangen is a university city in the German state of Bavaria, located in the administrative region of Middle Franconia. The city is renowned for its historic Baroque architecture, the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität, and as a major technology and research hub.

Flag Description: The flag consists of a horizontal bicolour of two equal bands of white and red with an aspect ratio of 3:5. Centered on the flag is the city's coat of arms. The shield is divided horizontally and party per pale in the upper half: in the upper left field from the viewer's perspective (heraldic dexter) is a red Brandenburg eagle with golden armor, crown, and a breastshield quartered in black and silver (Hohenzollern); in the upper right field (heraldic sinister) is a black Prussian eagle with golden armor, crown, and golden letters 'ES' on its breast; in the lower blue field is a golden double-tailed crowned lion rampant standing behind a silver embattled wall.

Symbolism: White and red are the traditional city colors. The coat of arms reflects the history of Erlangen under Hohenzollern rule: the red eagle represents the Margraviate of Brandenburg-Bayreuth, the black Prussian eagle with the 'ES' cipher refers to Margravine Elisabeth Sophie of Brandenburg, and the golden lion on blue behind a wall represents the historic coat of arms of the Old Town of Erlangen.
