Étampes is a sub‑prefecture commune in the Essonne department, part of the Paris metropolitan area in northern France. Located on the river Chalouette, a tributary of the Juine, it was founded in the early 7th century and hosted several medieval councils, notably the 1130 council that confirmed Pope Innocent II.
