Summary

About the place: Františkov nad Ploučnicí is a municipality in the Děčín District of the Ústí nad Labem Region, situated in the scenic Ploučnice River valley within the Central Bohemian Uplands beneath the ruins of the medieval Ostrý Castle (Scharfenstein). The village has historically been tied to textile manufacturing and lies along the transit corridor between Děčín and Česká Lípa.

Flag Description: The flag consists of a hoist section featuring a white-and-black vertically split canton above an equally sized red square bearing a white lion with yellow claws and tongue; the fly section comprises two horizontal stripes: an upper blue stripe and a lower stripe divided into an upper green and a lower blue section by a yellow bend sinister wavy (diagonal wavy stripe). Projecting into the blue stripe is an ashlar-masoned white tower with four merlons, and the yellow wavy stripe is charged with a bendwise black weaver's shuttle with a red skein of yarn. The width-to-length ratio is 2:3.

Symbolism: The white-and-black vertically split field and the white lion in a red field are derived from the coat of arms of the Lords of Michalovice, the medieval founders and builders of nearby Ostrý Castle (Scharfenstein). The ashlar tower with battlements directly represents this ruined fortress. The blue tincture and the wavy stripe symbolize the Ploučnice River, while the wavy bend also references the ancestral arms of the House of Thun-Hohenstein, who historically founded Františkov (Franzenthal). The black weaver's shuttle with a red skein commemorates the town's historical weaving and textile industry.
