Summary

About the place: Fulda is a historic cathedral and university city in the German state of Hesse, situated on the Fulda River near the Rhön Mountains.

Flag Description: The flag of the city consists of two horizontal stripes—green on top and white on the bottom—with an aspect ratio of 3:5. In the center of the flag is the city coat of arms. The coat of arms features a shield topped with a golden mural crown with four merlons. The shield is per pale: the dexter side (left from viewer's perspective) displays a black cross on a white (silver) field, while the sinister side (right from viewer's perspective) displays three white lilies on green stems growing from a green triple mount against a red field.

Symbolism: The green and white colors represent the traditional city colors of Fulda. The black cross on the dexter side symbolizes the historical Prince-Bishopric and Abbey of Fulda. The three white lilies growing from a triple mount on the sinister side represent the patron saints of the city (Saints Simplicius, Faustinus, and Beatrix) as well as the surrounding landscape of the Rhön region. The golden mural crown atop the shield indicates the status of a city.
