Summary

About the place: Goch is a town in the district of Kleve, in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is situated in the Lower Rhine region, close to the border with the Netherlands.

Flag Description: The flag is designed as a vertical banner (Hängeflagge). The upper section (bannerhead) consists of a white square field containing the city's coat of arms. The shield is divided horizontally; the upper blue field features a emerging golden double-tailed lion with a red crown and red claws/tongue, while the lower golden field displays a red five-petaled rose with a golden center and green sepals. The lower section of the banner consists of two vertical stripes, blue on the left (hoist side from viewer's perspective) and yellow on the right.

Symbolism: Blue and yellow are the official city colors of Goch. The lion in the upper part of the coat of arms originates from the arms of the Duchy of Guelders, whose Count Otto II granted town rights to Goch in the 13th century. The red rose in the lower field represents the historical connection to the County of Cleves.
