Summary

About the place: Gyöngyös is a Hungarian town located in Heves County at the foot of the Mátra Mountains. It serves as a major economic, cultural, and viticultural center, often referred to as the gateway to Mátra.

Flag Description: The flag consists of a green rectangular field. In the center of the flag is the town's coat of arms within a golden ornate cartouche. The shield is blue with a green base, on which a black wolf with a red tongue is running towards the hoist (to the left from the viewer's perspective). Above the wolf, in the upper part of the shield, there is an eight-pointed golden star on the left and a silver crescent moon with a human face on the right. Above the cartouche, the text 'GYÖNGYÖS' is written in gold letters.

Symbolism: The green field and shield base symbolize the landscape at the foot of the Mátra Mountains and agriculture. The running wolf is a historical motif from old municipal seals, representing vigilance and strength. The eight-pointed star and crescent moon with a face are traditional heraldic symbols common in Hungarian iconography.
