Herne, North Rhine-Westphalia

Herne is a city in the Ruhr area of North Rhine‑Westphalia, Germany, situated between Bochum and Gelsenkirchen. It grew from a small village in the 19th century into an industrial centre thanks to coal mining and steel production. After World War II the city earned the nickname “Die Goldene Stadt” for its relatively light war damage.
