Summary

About the place: Herten is a city in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, located in the district of Recklinghausen within the industrial Ruhr region. The city is known for its coal mining heritage as well as the historic moated castle, Schloss Herten.

Flag Description: The flag is designed as a vertical banner (Hängeflagge). The top white field (banner head) displays the city's coat of arms. The shield is divided horizontally; the upper green field shows a silver (white) deer antler, while the lower half is split vertically—the left side (viewer's perspective) features a red five-petaled rose with green sepals and a yellow center on a white field, and the right side displays a checkered pattern of six black and white squares (2 columns × 3 rows). Below the banner head, the flag is vertically divided into two equal stripes, green on the left and white on the right.

Symbolism: The green and white colors of the banner match the traditional colors of the city. The deer antler in the upper part of the shield refers to the noble family von Nesselrode and the forested surroundings. The red rose represents the former lordship of Westerholt (now part of Herten), while the black and white checkered field originates from the coat of arms of the family von Elverfeldt.
