Summary

About the place: Hořany is a small Central Bohemian rural municipality in the Nymburk District, situated on a gentle elevation at an altitude of approximately 219 m above sea level near Poříčany and Sadská. The village represents an exceptionally well-preserved example of a mid-19th-century Central Bohemian rural planned settlement and is designated as a protected heritage zone.

Flag Description: A green flag with a lower white stripe arched upwards into the upper half of the sheet (representing a hill). Standing upon the white stripe/hill is the white facade of a chapel with an open lantern surmounted by a pommel and a Latin cross, flanked on each side by a pendent, outwardly inclined white linden leaf with fructification. The ratio of the flag's width to length is 2:3.

Symbolism: The flag and coat of arms (designed by heraldist Jan Tejkal and granted in 2018) reflect the village's local heritage and geography. The convex white stripe forming a hill alludes to the elevated position of the settlement and the etymological origin of its name (derived from "on the hill"). The chapel facade represents the prominent village landmark, the Chapel of the Virgin Mary on the village green. The linden leaves refer to the historic linden trees standing on the green and the Czech national tree, while the green and white livery signifies the rural agricultural landscape and peace.
