Summary

About the place: Horní Planá is a town in the South Bohemian Region (Český Krumlov District), situated on the northern shore of the Lipno Reservoir in the Bohemian Forest foothills. It is a popular tourist and recreational center and the birthplace of the writer and painter Adalbert Stifter.

Flag Description: The flag consists of two horizontal stripes, white and an arched green bottom stripe, in a width ratio of 9 : 1. Overlaid across both stripes is an upright sitting brown bear with a red tongue and white teeth, holding a red five-petalled rose with a yellow center and green sepals. The width-to-length ratio of the sheet is 2 : 3.

Symbolism: The flag and historical coat of arms derive directly from the Lords of Rosenberg (Rožmberk), who owned the Český Krumlov estate including Horní Planá for centuries. The red five-petalled rose is the iconic heraldic charge of the Rosenberg dynasty, while the bear references the Renaissance Rosenberg family legend claiming descent from the noble Roman Orsini family (from Latin ursus – bear). The arched green base represents the hilly, forested Šumava landscape.
