Summary
The Andean region served as the cradle of complex societies, most notably the Inca Empire, whose sophisticated administrative and agricultural systems profoundly shaped the landscape and culture. Prior to the Inca, numerous regional cultures flourished, including the Chavín, Nazca, and Moche, each leaving behind distinctive artistic and architectural legacies. The Spanish conquest in the 16th century dramatically altered Peru's trajectory, introducing new political, religious, and social structures that layered upon existing indigenous foundations. Colonial Peru became a vital center of Spanish power, renowned for its silver mines and the exploitation of indigenous labor. Following independence in the early 19th century, Peru experienced periods of political instability and economic challenges, grappling with issues of social inequality and regional disparities.
