Summary

About the place: Janov is a municipality in the Svitavy District in the Pardubice Region of the Czech Republic, situated in the undulating landscape of the Svitavy Uplands about 7 km southeast of Litomyšl. It consists of four municipal parts (Janov, Gajer, Mendryka, and Semanín) with a distinctly rural and agricultural character.

Flag Description: The flag consists of two horizontal stripes of blue and red with a 2:3 aspect ratio. Centered in the red stripe is a yellow cauldron with three black horizontal stripes and a handle extending into the blue stripe. Issuing diagonally from the cauldron toward the hoist is a yellow crosier with a white sudarium, and toward the fly a yellow crowned lion with red armament.

Symbolism: The golden crosier with a sudarium commemorates the earliest documented owner of the settlement, the Litomyšl bishopric. The cauldron with stripes is derived from the coat of arms of María Manrique de Lara, wife of Vratislav of Pernštejn (with the three stripes also symbolizing the historical parts of the municipality). The crowned golden lion represents Count Jiří Kristián of Waldstein, who commissioned the local chateau and church.
