Summary

About the place: Kocs is a village in Komárom-Esztergom County, Hungary, located west of Tata and approximately 65 km northwest of Budapest. The settlement is historically famous as the birthplace of the covered wagon and coach, giving its name to the word for coach in many languages.

Flag Description: The flag consists of a white rectangular field with the village coat of arms centered upon it. The coat of arms features a vertically divided shield with a pointed base; the left field from the observer's perspective (heraldic dexter) is gold and depicts a brown traditional coach wagon (kocsi szekér), while the right field (heraldic sinister) displays the red and silver Árpád stripes. Above the shield rests a silver ram with a gold horn.

Symbolism: The depiction of the historic carriage commemorates the local 15th-century wheelwright industry, which made the village famous and gave rise to the word coach in many European languages. The red and silver stripes represent traditional Árpád Hungarian heraldry. The ram crest above the shield draws upon the historic village seal and the etymological origin of the name Kocs. The white background is traditional for Hungarian municipal flags displaying a centered coat of arms.
