Kota Kinabalu, formerly Jesselton, serves as the state capital of Sabah, Malaysia, situated on the northwest coast of Borneo. Originally known as Dondoung by the Kadazandusuns, it came under Bruneian influence in the 15th century. The city was rebuilt after extensive damage during WWII and renamed Kota Kinabalu in 1967.
