Summary
Kovel is a city in Volyn Oblast, northwestern Ukraine, serving as the administrative center of Kovel Raion. Historically, it received its town charter in 1518 from Polish King Sigismund I the Old and was a royal city of Poland. The city was a site of battles during both World War I and the Polish-Soviet War.
