Summary
Kronstadt is a Russian port city on Kotlin Island, 30 km west of Saint Petersburg, forming part of the Kronshtadtsky District of the federal city. Founded by Peter the Great in 1703, it became the main base of the Baltic Fleet and a key maritime defence point. The city was the site of the 1921 Kronstadt rebellion and its historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
