Kurgan, Kurgan Oblast

Kurgan is a city and the administrative center of Kurgan Oblast in Russia, located in the Urals Federal District. Originally established as Tsaryovo Gorodishche in the 17th century, it served as a frontier post defending against nomad attacks. The city received its current name and city privileges in 1782 under Catherine the Great.
