La Mesa is a city in San Diego County, California, nine miles east of downtown San Diego. Originally inhabited by the Kumeyaay people, it was later valued by Spanish, Mexican, and American settlers for its natural springs. Incorporated in 1912, La Mesa experienced civil unrest in 2020 following the murder of George Floyd.
