Summary
Lanaken is a municipality in the Belgian province of Limburg, bordering Maastricht in the Netherlands. Historically, the area was part of the seigniory of Pietersheim of Loon, with the Abbey of Hocht founded around 1186. During WWI, the center of Lanaken was burned by German forces in retaliation for local resistance.
