Lens, Pas-de-Calais

Lens is a city in the Pas-de-Calais department of northern France, historically part of the County of Flanders. It received a city charter in the 13th century from Louis VIII and later became part of the Spanish Netherlands. The discovery of coal in 1849 transformed Lens into a major industrial center.
