Summary

About the place: Lessines is a Walloon city located in the Belgian province of Hainaut along the river Dender. It is famous as the birthplace of the renowned surrealist painter René Magritte and as a center for porphyry quarrying.

Flag Description: The flag is vertically divided into red on the hoist side and yellow on the fly side. In the center of the flag is the municipal coat of arms featuring a shield horizontally divided into seven red and yellow bars (four red and three yellow), over which is placed a vertical silver (white) key with the bit facing upwards and towards the hoist.

Symbolism: The red and yellow colors derive from the historical arms of the city. The shield with seven red and yellow bars represents the coat of arms of the House of d'Oisy, former lords of Lessines. The silver key is the attribute of Saint Peter, patron of the local parish church and protector of the town.
