Summary

About the place: Liberec is a city in the north of the Czech Republic and the capital of the Liberec Region, located in the Liberec Basin between the Ještěd-Kozákov Ridge and the Jizera Mountains on the Lusatian Neisse river.

Flag Description: The flag consists of two horizontal bands, red on top and white on the bottom. In the center of the flag is the city's coat of arms depicted in a silver (white) Spanish shield. The coat of arms features a red city wall with an open gate with golden doors and a raised black portcullis, flanked by two red towers with conical roofs and blue pennants. Between the towers, on the battlements of the wall, stands a walking golden Czech lion. Above the gate hangs a blue escutcheon displaying a silver spoked wheel.

Symbolism: The red and white colors are derived from the city's traditional colors and the heraldic colors of the Bohemian lion. The city wall and towers symbolize municipal rights and strength, while the golden lion represents allegiance to the Kingdom of Bohemia, granted by King Vladislaus II in 1577. The silver wheel on the blue shield is the coat of arms of the Redern family, under whose rule Liberec experienced significant development.
