Lubumbashi, formerly Élisabethville, is the second-largest city in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Established by the Belgian government in 1910, it was named in honor of Queen Elisabeth of Belgium. The city became a crucial center for copper mining and processing in the Katanga province.
