Makhachkala, formerly known as Petrovskoye and Port-Petrovsk, serves as the capital of Dagestan, Russia. Situated on the Caspian Sea, it evolved from the ancient port town of Anji, historically part of the Tarki state. Renamed in 1921 after Makhach Dakhadaev, it became the capital of the Dagestan ASSR.
