Summary
About the place: Makó is a town in southeastern Hungary in Csongrád-Csanád County, located near the Romanian border along the Maros River. It is famous for its high-quality onion production and thermal baths.
Flag Description: The flag consists of two horizontal stripes, red on top and blue on the bottom. In the center of the flag is the town's coat of arms. The coat of arms features a blue shield with a green base, bordered in gold. In the blue field, a latin cross stands upon a gold crown, entwined with a green snake with yellow spots. Atop the cross sits a white bird facing left from the viewer's perspective. To the left of the cross from the viewer's perspective (heraldic dexter) is a silver crescent moon, and to the right (heraldic sinister) stands a white stork alongside bulrushes. Above the shield, the word 'MAKÓ' is inscribed in yellow/gold letters.
Symbolism: The red and blue colors are the traditional colors of the town. The coat of arms displayed on the flag is based on a historical seal and combines religious and local natural symbolism: the cross entwined with a serpent evokes the biblical motif of salvation and healing, the dove symbolizes peace or the Holy Spirit, the crescent moon reflects the historical Ottoman period, and the stork with reeds represents the natural river and wetland environment of the Maros river region.
