Summary
Mažeikiai is a city in northwestern Lithuania, situated on the Venta River. First mentioned in 1335, it was part of the Duchy of Samogitia within the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The city experienced rapid growth with the construction of the Libau–Romny Railway in 1869.
