Miyakonojō is a city in Miyazaki Prefecture located in the Miyakonojō basin, surrounded by the Kirishima and Wanizuka Mountains. It was the site of the Shimazu Estate, the largest landed manor of medieval Japan, which served as the foundation for the powerful Shimazu clan. The city is traversed by the Ōyodo River.
