Summary

About the place: Monschau is a historic resort town located in the Eifel region of western Germany, near the Belgian border. The town is famous for its well-preserved historic centre featuring characteristic half-timbered houses and its picturesque setting in the valley of the Rur River.

Flag Description: The flag has a height-to-width ratio of 3:5. At the hoist on the left side (from the viewer's perspective) is a vertical yellow stripe featuring a black lion rampant/passant with red tongue and claws, holding a silver shield bearing nine red roundels arranged in rows of 4, 3, and 2. The remainder of the flag consists of two horizontal stripes: red on top and white on the bottom.

Symbolism: The vertical yellow stripe contains an element from the town's coat of arms: a black lion representing the former Duchy of Jülich holding a shield with red roundels from the coat of arms of the Lords of Schönforst. The horizontal red and white stripes reflect the traditional municipal colours of Monschau.
