Montreal is the largest city in the province of Quebec and the second-largest city in Canada. Founded in 1642 as Ville-Marie, it takes its name from the triple-peaked Mount Royal located in the city center. It is situated on an island between the St. Lawrence River and Rivière des Prairies.
