Olten is a town in the Swiss canton of Solothurn, serving as a major railway hub at the junction of lines to Zurich, Basel, Bern, and Lucerne. The settlement originated as a Roman vicus and later developed into a medieval fortified bridge-head over the Aare river. It is historically significant for its long-standing tradition of resistance against authority, notably losing its city rights in 1653.
