Summary
Pasto, officially San Juan de Pasto, is the capital of Nariño department in southern Colombia, located in the Atriz Valley at the foot of the Galeras volcano. Founded in 1537 by Sebastián de Belalcázar and relocated in 1539, the city served as a royalist stronghold during the independence wars. Today it is a cultural and theological centre, known for its high‑altitude Mediterranean climate and proximity to the 4,276 m Galeras volcano.
