Summary

Payerne is a municipality in the Swiss canton of Vaud, now part of the district of Broye‑Vully. It originated from a 6th‑century villa built by Bishop Marius and later hosted the Cluniac priory where Emperor Conrad II was crowned King of Burgundy in 1033. The town retained medieval self‑government, signing treaties with Bern and Fribourg in the 14th century.
