Peabody is a city in Essex County, Massachusetts, United States, situated on the North Shore. Founded in 1626 as part of Salem, it became the independent town of South Danvers in 1855 and was renamed Peabody in 1868 after philanthropist George Peabody. The city obtained city status in 1916 and was historically a major center of New England's leather industry.
