Summary
Pilar is the capital of the Paraguayan department of Ñeembucú, situated along the Paraguay River. Founded in 1779 as Villa del Ñeembucú, it was renamed Villa del Pilar in 1783 by priest Marcial Antonio Uliambre. During the Paraguayan War, Pilar was the site of two battles in 1867 and a skirmish in 1876.
