Summary
Purmerend is a city and municipality in the province of North Holland, Netherlands, situated amidst reclaimed polders. Founded in 1410 by Willem Eggert with permission from Count William VI of Holland, it grew from a fishing village around the Purmer Lake. The town received city rights in 1434 and market rights in 1484, fostering trade and agriculture.
