Summary

Quebec City, the capital of Quebec province, was founded by Samuel de Champlain in 1608 on the site of an Algonquin settlement. Its fortified walls, the only ones remaining north of Mexico, were designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1985. The city's name originates from the Algonquin word 'Kébec', meaning 'where the river narrows'.
