Raleigh is the capital of North Carolina, known as the "City of Oaks" due to its tree-lined streets. Founded in 1792, it was strategically planned with the State Capitol at its center, Union Square. The city experienced economic hardship after the Civil War but revitalized with the creation of Research Triangle Park in 1959.
