Ratingen is a town in the district of Mettmann, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, located northeast of Düsseldorf. It received city rights in 1276 and experienced economic growth in the late Middle Ages. The first mechanical spinnery in Europe opened here in 1783, becoming the Textilfabrik Cromford.
