Redding serves as the county seat of Shasta County in Northern California, and is a key economic hub. Originally known as Poverty Flats, the city was renamed in honor of railroad land agent Benjamin B. Redding. The area was historically inhabited by the Wintu tribe and later became the northernmost non-native settlement in California.
